XL Group is a business technology company that provides highly optimized software solutions tailored to customers’ needs. It specializes in mobile salesforce automation, data management and business-intelligence tools that improve sales, marketing and operations effectiveness.
On-the-go sales representatives for one Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company use an XL Group mobile application to keep track of samples of medical equipment and supplies they distribute to doctors’ offices and pharmacies. In late 2010, many of the reps were running this tracking software on Windows Mobile hardware, but they were also eyeing the possibilities of trading up to tablets such as the iPad, with more touch-responsive features and a larger screen. To make this happen, XL reached out to the tablet experts at MEI.
Among the requirements for the new iPad app were contact management and search, sales-call and inventory tracking and functionality for capturing client signatures with the device’s touch screen. After developing a plan for reworking XL’s existing software to take advantage of iPad-specific technology, MEI’s engineers got to work. In about three months, MEI delivered a prototype that illustrated several of the required features.
Once XL signed off on the prototype, MEI created additional development materials, including screen mockups and more detailed product specifications to guide XL’s plans for porting the tracking system to the iPad.
